INFORMATION/INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN - Examples

There are examples of Informative and Instructional Designs surrounding us on a daily basis, They exist in all forms of media including electronic/web based media, print media (magazines and news papers etc.) and even street signs and billboards. Infact the tree bost regognisable Information Designs in the world are the Cristian Cross, the Macdonalds 'Golden Arches' and the Coca-Cola logo. These designs are seen all over the world and most people instantly know what they mean when they see them. Its a very interesting that two of the most recognisable Information Designs on earth are infact corporate logos. Other Informative and Instructional Designs include;

  • Targets - (shoot here)

  • The green shape on your mobile phone - (pick up)

  • The small house in your internet browser - (home)

  • Male and Female stick figures - (bathroom)

  • Traffic lights - (Stop, slowdown, go)

INFORMATION/INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN - Definition

Information Design is in essence designing logos or graphics with the specific intention of providing the user/viewer with an instruction or conveying some sort of information. These types of design are around us everywhere on a daily basis and are found not just in electronic formats. People are often looking at Informative and Instructional Designs without even being aware of it. Everything from a Stop Sign on the street, to a graph in a text book or even the little house shaped picture on the internet that navigates you back to your home page is an example of these types of designs. Information Designs play a huge role in web browsing where web and graphic designers are trying to give the best information and direction possible to the user whilst using as few words a possible in order to avoid cluttering the page with unnecessary text.

WEB 2.0 - Definition

Web 2.0 is what people refer to as the second generation of web design and browsing. It has a much higher focus on interactivity between users and the sites that the view. This in affect gives users a feeling that they are participating in a community and are hence far more involved in the overall process. The term was first coined in 2004 after the O’Reilly Media Web 2.0 Conference (an annual conference, last year held in San Francisco) and refers more so to a change in the software being developed for the web rather than any actual improvement in technical specifications.

WEB 2.0 - Examples

Web 2.0 in more simple terms refers to sites where the users are able to interact with each other and make changes to the site as they view it. The most common examples of this are blogs, chat sites, forums, video sites and ‘spaces’. Some of the best known Web 2.0 sites include:
